Want to know more about Stonnington?

The City of Stonnington is a Local Government Area of Melbourne. It is made up of inner south-eastern suburbs, between 3km and 13 km from Melbourne’s centre. The city covers an area of 25km2 and includes the suburbs of South Yarra, Prahran, Windsor, Toorak, Armadale, Kooyong, Glen Iris, Malvern and Malvern East, which are some of Melbourne’s most affluent and coveted suburbs.

Stonnington was named after Stonnington mansion, built in 1890 for one of the founding partners of Cobb and Co. He named the house after his wife’s hometown in Connecticut. Stonnington, like other LGAs in metropolitan Melbourne, was formed by the merging of multiple cities, particularly Malvern and Prahran, in 1994. The Malvern Town Hall was renamed the Stonnington City Centre and became the headquarters of the new Stonnington City Council.

Stonnington has a population of over 100,000, and given its small size relative to other LGAs in Melbourne has some of Melbourne’s most dense residential living. The western part of Stonnington, around South Yarra, Prahran and Windsor was part of the River Yarra flood plain and much of the area was covered by swamps and creeks formed from the run-off from the Malvern Hills to the East. The Albert Park Lake is a remnant of the original flood plain.

Stonnington’s northern border is the Yarra River and Gardiner’s Creek, its eastern border is Warrigal Road, its southern, Dandenong Road and Queens Way, and Punt Road is its western boundary.
