Want to know more about Manningham?
The City of Manningham is located in the north east of Melbourne. Manningham traverses from east to west along the southern banks of the Yarra River and across the Koonung, Ruffey and Mullum Mullum Creeks. The area closest to Melbourne’s CBD is typical of suburban Melbourne, although many of the suburbs are situated on undulating hills and valleys, which is unique to the eastern part of Melbourne. Areas further from the city are less heavily populated and transition into natural bushland. Additionally, a green wedge runs along the Yarra River, ensuring that vast tracts of parkland run through Manningham.
The largest suburbs in Manningham are Doncaster and Templestowe, and these contain the largest concentration of the city’s 130,000 residents. Manningham covers an area approximately 110km2.
The first European settlers in the area planted orchards taking advantage of the various water sources in the area. Ultimately, Manningham saw sporadic growth of low density suburban development until the mid-late 20th century. After the Second World War however, urbanisation, particularly in the west of Manningham, developed rapidly.
As a municipality Manningham, was created in 1994 and contains the old City of Doncaster & Templestowe. Ringwood North, however, fell into the City of Maroondah, and Wonga Park was annexed from the Shire of Lillydale.
Bulleen, a suburb within the municipality, was the name proposed for Manningham however eventually it was considered too localised, so the name of one of the major roads was adopted and Manningham Road was chosen.
